Brief report of the Energy Storage Summit Central Eastern Europe
The Central and Eastern European (CEE) region is undergoing a critical shift towards renewable energy, driven by both the ambitious EU climate targets (net-zero emissions by 2050) and regional energy security concerns that were concluded during the Energy Storage Summit CEE in 2024.
As the event highlighted, the region is experiencing unprecedented growth in this sector, driven by factors such as increasing grid integration, government support, and the need for energy security. However, one of the most pressing challenges for the CEE region remains the effective integration of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, into the existing grid. This is where energy storage solutions are becoming increasingly vital.
New challenges on the horizon
Energy storage technologies, including battery storage and pumped hydro, offer the flexibility required to balance the intermittent nature of renewables. In countries like Poland, Hungary, and Romania, which have historically relied on fossil fuels, integrating energy storage will be crucial for maintaining grid stability and ensuring a reliable power supply. The European Union’s ambitious climate targets, such as achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, further necessitate an accelerated adoption of storage systems across the CEE region.
Quality projects in CEE
The Energy Storage Summit CEE in 2024 showed that several pilot projects are already in place, and EU funding is helping to push forward large-scale energy storage solutions. Poland, for example, is investing in lithium-ion battery technology, while Romania is exploring new pumped hydro opportunities. Hungary’s energy strategy also includes plans to expand storage capacity in conjunction with solar energy projects, creating an integrated renewable energy network. Thus, our region saw а revitalized interest in renewable energy projects over the past few years which also translated into a heightened deal activity and scramble for quality projects. However, challenges remain in terms of financing and policy development as well as implementing these projects. According to the majority of the speakers, governments across the region must ensure a clear regulatory framework and provide financial incentives for both local and international investors.

Energy storage is not just a technical solution but a critical piece of the puzzle in enabling the CEE region to meet its renewable energy targets and improve energy security. As the region continues to diversify its energy sources, energy storage will play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and resilient future.
